“Land of Abundance”—Chengdu

Chengdu, known as the “land of abundance”, is the capital of Sichuan Province. It lies at the center of West Sichuan Plain and boasts a unique and livable natural environment. It is a Famous Historical and Cultural City in China and also the largest modern city in southwest China. It is said that the King of Shu moved his capital here during the Warring States period (approximately two thousand years ago). Since then, a settlement erected in a year. A city came into being in the second year and it became a metropolis (Cheng Du) in the year after, hence the name Chengdu. In the Han Dynasty, the brocade industry in Chengdu boomed, earning Chengdu the nickname “the city of brocade”. During the Five Dynasties, Meng Chang, the King of the Later Shu, made the order to plant hibiscus across the city. When the hibiscus was in full bloom, Chengdu became a sea of hibiscus blossoms. That’s why Chengdu is also called “the city of hibiscus”.

Chengdu enjoys convenient transportation and a well-developed tourism industry. With a history of more than 3,000 years, Chengdu is the cradle of the ancient Shu civilization, making it one of the top 10 ancient cities in China, one of the first national famous historical and cultural cities, and one of the best tourist cities in China. Famous scenic spots and historical sites are spread all over the city and suburbia. One may take a pleasant walk at Wide and Narrow Alley, have a romantic rendezvous at Jinli Ancient Block, or watch Sichuan Opera featured by the face-changing stunt.     Furthermore, Chengdu has been rated as the “City of Gastronomy” by UNESCO. Sichuan cuisine is one of the four major cuisines in China, thanks to its diverse styles and unique cooking methods which deliver dishes in a fresh, mellow, and lingering note. Spicy and tongue-numbing are its call name, Sichuan hot pot in particular.
